Penguins Star to Play for Team Canada at IIHF World Championship

Sidney Crosby is heading back to Team Canada, and he’s bringing all the star power you’d expect from “Captain Canada.”

The 37-year-old hockey legend will suit up for his country at the 2025 IIHF World Championship, marking his first appearance in the tournament since leading Canada to gold in 2015.

It’s pretty amazing to think about Crosby’s international track record. He’s won just about everything there is to win while wearing the maple leaf – including that unforgettable “Golden Goal” at the 2010 Olympics that had an entire nation jumping off their couches.

This will be his ninth time representing Canada. His trophy case is already stuffed with gold medals from:
• The Olympics
• The World Cup of Hockey (2016)
• The World Championship (2015)
• The World Junior Championship (2005)

The timing makes sense. With the Pittsburgh Penguins missing the playoffs this year, Crosby’s got a rare opening in his May schedule. For a guy who’s used to playing deep into the postseason, this is a chance to compete in some meaningful games.

He’ll be joining Penguins GM Kyle Dubas overseas, fresh off Canada’s win at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February.

Here’s an interesting twist: Crosby will be the team’s elder statesman by quite a margin – he’s nearly four years older than the next-oldest player, Ryan O’Reilly.

But he might not be the only Nova Scotian star making the trip. There’s buzz around Nathan MacKinnon possibly joining the team after his Colorado Avalanche got knocked out by the Dallas Stars in the first round.

TSN’s Darren Dreger says there’s a “decent chance” MacKinnon joins his childhood friend Crosby on Team Canada. Like Sid, MacKinnon rarely gets this opportunity since he’s usually still playing in the NHL playoffs this time of year.
