The Pittsburgh Penguins are close to solving their Sidney Crosby line dilemma.
Reports suggest they are finalizing a deal to acquire Rutger McGroarty from the Winnipeg Jets. In return, the Penguins will send Brayden Yager to Winnipeg. McGroarty is expected to be a top forward prospect for the Penguins and could join the NHL roster next season if he signs his entry-level contract.
McGroarty was picked 14th overall in the 2022 NHL Draft and had committed to playing his junior season at the University of Michigan. However, with this trade, his plans might change as he looks for more opportunities at the NHL level. He reportedly asked for a trade from Winnipeg in June, seeking better chances to play in the NHL.
McGroarty’s performance speaks volumes . He finished ninth in NCAA scoring with 16 goals and 52 points in just 36 games during the 2023-24 season. At the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championships, he scored five goals and nine points over seven games, leading Team USA to a gold medal. If he joins Pittsburgh for the 2024-25 season, he’ll fill an essential role on Crosby’s wing with his playmaking skills and relentless forechecking.
Trade Implications:
His style fits well with both Crosby and Malkin since he creates space for them while also having a strong shot himself. On the other hand, Yager was drafted one year after McGroarty as the 14th overall pick in 2023. Last season with WHL’s Moose Jaw Warriors, Yager scored an impressive 35 goals and collected 95 points over 57 games as assistant captain.
Yager shined even brighter during playoffs with Moose Jaw by scoring 11 goals and earning 27 points in just 20 games leading them to become WHL champions . He also represented Team Canada at the World Juniors but didn’t medal despite scoring five points in five games.
Fans might feel mixed about these changes; some may see it as a fresh start while others might miss Yager’s potential on Pittsburgh’s roster next season.
Now heading to Winnipeg, Yager aims to make their team during training camp after recently signing his entry-level contract last month. The young center from Saskatoon brings defensive awareness along with his right-handed shot which adds value compared to McGroarty’s offensive prowess.
If Cole Perfetti doesn’t secure minutes on Winnipeg’s second line behind Mark Scheifele, then Yager could be seen as a strong long-term option at center.
