The hockey world is buzzing with an intriguing possibility: Sidney Crosby could end up wearing the iconic Montreal Canadiens sweater.
The Canadiens are among a “very short list” of teams that Crosby might consider if he decides to leave Pittsburgh, according to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman.
It’s not just idle speculation. Crosby, now 38, signed a two-year deal worth $17.4 million last September that gives him complete control over his future with a no-move clause.
“I know the Montreal speculation has exploded,” Friedman said on the “La Poche Bleue” podcast. “I don’t think it’s impossible.”
But don’t expect the Canadiens to talk about it. As Friedman notes, they know that would be “bad, bad news.”
Crosby’s been the face of the Penguins for his entire career, leading them to three Stanley Cups. He’s basically Pittsburgh hockey royalty.
So why would the Penguins even think about letting him go?
Money talks. Moving Crosby’s contract would free up cash to sign younger talent. Plus, the team might be ready for a fresh start after not winning a Cup since 2017.
That’s actually part of what makes this interesting. Crosby’s agent, Pat Brisson, recently told The Athletic that his client is hungry for another championship run.
For Montreal, landing Crosby would be huge. Their young stars like Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, and Juraj Slafkovsky would get to learn from one of the best to ever play the game.
The timing could be perfect. The Canadiens have built up an impressive group of young talent, and they’re starting to look like a team ready to make some noise.
Crosby would slot in perfectly as their top center, letting Suzuki take on a strong second-line role. Plus, he’s still elite at face-offs – something Montreal could really use.
The Habs are already showing promise, having just beaten Pittsburgh 2-1 in their preseason opener. Adding Crosby could be the move that turns them from promising to powerful.
But remember – it all comes down to what Sid the Kid wants. And for now, he’s not saying anything.
