Connor Dewar is making the Toronto Maple Leafs look silly right now.
The young forward, who was basically an afterthought in Toronto’s deadline deals, is lighting it up with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He’s already scored three goals and added an assist in just six games with his new team.
That’s quite a turnaround for a guy who managed only three assists during his entire stint with the Leafs.
Toronto shipped Dewar and Conor Timmins to Pittsburgh as part of their deadline shuffle, mainly to free up money for bigger moves. They used that cap space to bring in Scott Laughton and Brandon Carlo.
But now? The Penguins might have struck gold.
Dewar’s sudden scoring burst raises some uncomfortable questions for Leafs management. Did they give up too soon on a player who just needed the right opportunity? Was this another case of Toronto missing out on a late-blooming talent?
It’s still early days, of course. Six games is a small sample size. But for Penguins fans watching Dewar find the back of the net with surprising regularity, it’s looking like they got the better end of this deal.
The Leafs will be hoping their new additions prove worth the price. Because right now, Connor Dewar is making this trade look more lopsided with every goal he scores.
