The Rangers and Canucks finally got their deal done. J.T. Miller is heading back to New York in a blockbuster trade that’s been weeks in the making.
The deal includes Filip Chytil and Victor Mancini going to Vancouver, according to Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli.
It all came together quickly on Friday. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman broke the news first, reporting that Miller was likely heading to the Rangers – a team he’d been linked to for quite a while.
The interesting part? The deal that once seemed dead over money concerns suddenly found new life.
“JT Miller has been asked to Waive NMC to go to the NYR,” insider Darren Dreger tweeted. “Won’t be in the Canucks lineup tonight.”
No surprise – Miller quickly agreed to waive his no-trade clause. He wanted to be a Ranger.
“Sources say J.T. Miller has asked and verbally agreed to waive his ‘no-trade’ clause,” Seravalli reported. “Formal submission of paperwork pending.”
Here’s what made this deal work after previous talks fell apart: Vancouver isn’t keeping any of Miller’s salary. That was a huge sticking point earlier, but both teams found a way to make the money work this time.
The trade caps off a wild week of NHL deals, with Miller becoming the latest big name to change teams.
