Monday night’s game between the Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators was quite the spectacle. The aftermath of the chaotic encounter is now beginning to unfold.
On Tuesday, the NHL Department of Player Safety made an announcement. Senators forward Zack MacEwen got slapped with a $2,018.23 fine for unsportsmanlike conduct.
This fine, by the way, is the maximum allowed under the collective bargaining agreement. MacEwen, who’s 27, was initially given a five-minute major and a match penalty. This was for a check to the head during Ottawa’s 5-0 defeat to the Panthers.
The incident? It happened after Matthew Tkachuk hit Travis Hamonic early in the third period. There was some bad blood between Tkachuk and Hamonic from earlier. They’d had a brief scuffle as the second period ended, both getting minor unsportsmanlike conduct penalties.
It seemed like that was still on MacEwen’s mind when he went after Tkachuk. Remember, MacEwen was suspended in 2021 for kneeing Darnell Nurse of the Edmonton Oilers. He was playing for the Vancouver Canucks then and had to sit out one game because of that.
The game on Monday was a penalty fest. Both Brady and Matthew Tkachuk were in the thick of it. In total, there were 167 minutes in penalties, with 13 power plays between the teams.
There were also 13 misconducts. At one point, everyone on the ice was penalized in some way. Brady Tkachuk led the Sens with 16 penalty minutes, while Jonah Gadjovich and Sam Bennett each had 12 for the Panthers.
This game had the most penalty minutes since last April. Guess who was playing then? Yep, the Panthers and Senators. They racked up 168 penalty minutes that night, with Florida thrashing Ottawa, 7-2.
Currently, the Senators are at the bottom of the Atlantic Division with 16 points. They’re seven points shy of a playoff spot. The Panthers, on the other hand, are second in the division, trailing the Boston Bruins by four points.
