Veteran Goaltender Ends NHL Career

Antti Raanta is hanging up his skates in North America.

He shared with Sami Hoffren from Ilta-Sanomat that he’s done playing here. The 35-year-old had some interest from NHL teams, like Toronto, and even got a PTO offer from Vancouver. But those teams saw him as just backup insurance, possibly starting in the AHL.

Last season didn’t go well for Raanta. After a great 2022-23 with Carolina where he had a 2.23 GAA and .910 SV% in 27 games, things fell apart. His stats dropped to a 2.99 GAA and .872 SV%, leading Carolina to put him on waivers multiple times before sending him to AHL Chicago . There, his performance didn’t improve much either.

Raanta’s Career Recap:

Raanta played 277 NHL games for four different teams, ending with a record of 139-80-29. He achieved a career GAA of 2.48, an SV% of .915, and recorded 20 shutouts—a solid career for someone who wasn’t even drafted.

Fans might think it’s sad to see him leave the NHL after such a journey.

But this isn’t the end for Raanta’s hockey days entirely. He’s eyeing opportunities in Switzerland, Czechia or Germany now. Earlier this year, he turned down offers from these places hoping for an ideal NHL deal that never came.

What do you think about Raanta’s next move?
