A wild scene unfolded at Sunday’s Stadium Series when two NHL goalies dropped their blockers and went at it in what might be the craziest moment ever in an outdoor game.
Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy and Boston’s Jeremy Swayman threw down in a rare goalie fight that had the MetLife Stadium crowd going absolutely nuts.
It all started when Swayman got fired up during a scrum near his net. As the Bruins goalie started mixing it up with some Lightning players, Vasilevskiy decided to skate the entire length of the ice to join the action.
That’s when things got really interesting.
Both goalies shed their bulky equipment and started trading punches in what became the first-ever goalie fight in NHL outdoor game history.
The sight of two netminders going at it is something you almost never see anymore. Fighting in general has become pretty rare in today’s NHL – nothing like the old days when it seemed to happen every game.
What made this even more special? Goalie fights are like spotting a unicorn in modern hockey. To see one happen under the lights at MetLife Stadium felt almost surreal.
The crowd of over 70,000 fans erupted as they watched the two masked men square off in a moment that’ll be replayed for years to come.
It was the kind of old-school hockey drama that the NHL’s outdoor games were made for – even if nobody expected it would come from the guys between the pipes.
