In Thursday’s early trading update, Pierre LeBrun shared that Bill Armstrong is busy trying to replace injured players Sean Durzi and John Marino. Armstrong has shown interest in Ivan Provorov from the Columbus Blue Jackets, but other teams are also eyeing him. Provorov might not move unless Columbus gets an irresistible offer, as he is a valuable defenseman with no trade protection.
Provorov’s contract ends next summer, making him a prime target for teams wanting to rebuild. The Blue Jackets could hold onto him until the trade deadline to get the best deal possible. Utah Hockey Club may be eager enough to make an offer soon because they desperately need help on defense due to Durzi and Marino’s absence.
Utah is currently fourth in their division and aiming for the playoffs if rivals like Colorado Avalanche and Nashville Predators continue stumbling. With 26 draft picks over three years, Utah can tempt Columbus with multiple second-round selections instead of parting with a first-round pick.
Trade Possibilities:
Utah could sweeten the deal by offering forward Michael Carcone, who scored 21 goals last season but has only played three games this year. He would fit well with Columbus’s high-scoring lineup. Fans might think this trade would be exciting because it strengthens both teams.
Additionally, Utah holds Shea Weber’s hefty $7.857M salary on LTIR, which could help Columbus stay above the salary cap floor if activated for the rest of the season. This maneuver would give Columbus room to manage other contracts without taking on much more salary in future trades.
What do you think? Would these moves make sense?
