The NHL season is in full swing, and some defensemen are shining brightly on the ice.
Cale Makar has been unstoppable for the Colorado Avalanche, starting strong with 19 points in just 11 games by October’s end. Now, he’s racked up 38 points in 33 games, leading all defensemen and sitting 15th overall in scoring. Makar also tops the charts for expected goals and primary assists while playing over 25 minutes per game. Despite Colorado’s goalies struggling with one of the worst save percentages, Makar carries a heavy burden to support them. Already boasting accolades like the Calder Trophy, Norris Trophy in 2022, and Conn Smythe Trophy that same year, another trophy might soon join his collection.
Quinn Hughes from the Vancouver Canucks is proving his worth again after winning last season’s Norris Trophy. With an impressive tally of 35 points across 30 games, he ranks second among defensemen and holds a top spot with 1.17 points per game. Like Makar, Hughes plays over 25 minutes each game and helps his team dominate shots when he’s on ice with a remarkable share of total shots at 63%. Fans might wonder if Hughes can lead Vancouver to another division title and keep his Norris Trophy this year.
Top Contenders for Best Defenseman:
Zach Werenski from Columbus Blue Jackets was drafted eighth overall back in 2015 but has truly stepped up this season! His consistent performance shows through with him scoring point-for-point—31 points in as many games—and leading all skaters by averaging more than anyone else at nearly half-an-hour per match (26:15). Even though Columbus sits low on standings (12-14-5), Werenski’s name should appear frequently on those coveted ballots come award time due to stellar stats like ranking third among defenders both for expected goals (7.6) plus takeaways (21).
Fans may think it’s exciting to see such talent competing fiercely for recognition as top blueliners this season!
So what do you think? Will these players continue their amazing performances?
