The San Jose Sharks have locked in Henry Thrun with a two-year, $2M contract.
Thrun joined the Sharks late in the 2022-23 NHL season. General Manager Mike Grier praised Thrun, saying he’s been a solid part of their defense and they are excited to see him grow more with the team.
The Sharks got Thrun from the Anaheim Ducks in February 2023 for a third-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft. Thrun was originally picked by the Ducks as the 101st overall in 2019 but didn’t want to sign with them.
Henry Thrun’s Journey
Thrun is from Southborough, MA, and played three years at Harvard University. He was named team captain for the 2022-23 season. In his last two years there, he scored 14 goals and had 63 points in 68 games before joining the Sharks after his junior year.
In his first full season with San Jose, Thrun scored three goals and had 11 points over 51 games but had a -22 rating. HockeyReference noted his expected +/- was -16, showing he faced challenges on a weak defense line-up. Despite limited playtime, he tied for eighth on the team in blocked shots with 71.
Fans might think this move shows faith in young talent.
Now that Mario Ferraro is staying put despite trade rumors and Jake Walman has been added to strengthen their left side defense, Thrun is expected to be part of their bottom pairing. Being good at moving the puck means he’ll likely join one of their powerplay units too.
