The Ottawa Senators have locked up one of their promising young stars, signing Ridly Greig to a $13 million contract that’ll keep him in the capital until 2029.
The deal, which works out to $3.25 million per year, is a strong show of faith in the 22-year-old forward who’s still finding his groove in the NHL.
Greig’s been making waves this season with six goals and six assists in 36 games. While those numbers might not jump off the page, it’s his all-around game that’s got people talking.
"Ridly has established himself as a key member of our team going forward," said Steve Staios, the Senators’ president of hockey operations and general manager. "He brings a good mix of versatility and tenacity to our forward group."
What makes Greig special isn’t just about scoring goals. He’s got quick feet, some serious playmaking skills, and he’s really good at getting under opponents’ skin.
The young forward’s risen through the ranks pretty quickly. After just 46 games in the American Hockey League – where he put up 16 goals and 16 assists – he made the jump to the big leagues.
These days, he’s found himself playing alongside Brady Tkachuk and Shane Pinto, forming one of the Senators’ most exciting lines.
He’s already got some impressive international experience under his belt too. Greig helped Team Canada win gold at the 2022 World Juniors, scoring three goals and three assists in five games. He also suited up for Canada at last year’s World Championships, putting up three points in two games.
When this new contract wraps up, Greig will still be a restricted free agent, giving the Senators some control over his future. He’ll be eligible for arbitration then – something that wasn’t on the table if he’d held out this summer.
In total, Greig’s played 128 NHL games, scoring 21 goals and adding 26 assists. Those numbers might keep growing as he continues to develop his game in Ottawa’s system.
