The NHL Board of Governors meeting kicked off with quite the stir.
Michael Andlauer, who owns the Ottawa Senators, accused the New York Rangers of “soft tampering” over Brady Tkachuk. This came after a report claimed the Rangers were keen on trading for Tkachuk. While there’s no clear evidence that this info leaked from the Rangers, Ottawa thinks it did. Andlauer insists they haven’t talked about trading Tkachuk and hopes he stays their leader for a long time.
In response, the Rangers called the accusation “irresponsible” and said they’d leave it to the Commissioner’s office to handle. The league is likely to look into this since they’ve been cracking down on tampering lately. They even sent out a memo reminding teams about fines up to $5M or losing draft picks if caught tampering. Fans might wonder if this will lead to any real consequences.
League’s Stance on Tampering:
The NHL has been tightening its rules around tampering, especially after too many deals were made public before free agency began on July 1st. The last big incident was in 2016 when Vancouver’s former GM got fined $50K for talking about P.K. Subban and Steven Stamkos publicly.
What do you think? Will there be more drama or just a slap on the wrist?
