Sean Monahan’s return to the Columbus Blue Jackets couldn’t have come at a better time. The veteran center jumped right back into action Monday, picking up two assists in a crucial 4-3 win over the New York Islanders that snapped the team’s six-game losing streak.
It’s been a rough month without him. Monahan landed on injured reserve January 7th, leaving a big hole in the Blue Jackets’ offense.
Just how big? Before getting hurt, he was putting up incredible numbers – 41 points in 41 games, including 14 goals and 27 assists. That’s the kind of consistency that playoff teams dream about.
The Blue Jackets managed to stay competitive during his absence, going 13-12-3, but they clearly missed his veteran presence on the ice.
And Monahan wasn’t the only familiar face making a comeback Monday. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson also returned after being sidelined since October with shoulder surgery.
“It’s huge getting those guys back,” team captain Boone Jenner said. “I can’t say enough about each of them, what they bring on the ice and in the room here, just true pros that have been around for a long time.”
The timing couldn’t be more critical. With less than a month left in the regular season, Columbus is right in the thick of an intense wild-card race.
The Blue Jackets currently sit at 73 points (32-29-9), just two points behind the Montreal Canadiens and breathing down the necks of both the Islanders and Rangers.
They’ve got a real shot at sneaking into the playoffs, especially with three upcoming games against the Ottawa Senators. The Senators are sitting at 79 points, making those matchups potential game-changers.
If Monahan can pick up where he left off, don’t be surprised if Columbus pulls off something special down the stretch.
