The Buffalo Sabres placed Nicolas Aube-Kubel on waivers Monday, likely ending the former Maple Leafs forward’s brief stint with the team.
It’s been another tough season for Buffalo fans. Despite the Atlantic Division race getting tighter by the day, the Sabres’ playoff drought – now stretching over a decade – looks set to continue.
Aube-Kubel just couldn’t find his groove in Buffalo. The 27-year-old forward, who spent part of last season with Toronto, failed to meet the team’s expectations during his short time wearing the blue and gold.
The move comes as the Sabres try to shake things up during what’s becoming their 13th straight season without playoff hockey – the longest active drought in the NHL.

The timing is particularly tough for Aube-Kubel, with teams looking to solidify their lineups ahead of the playoff push. He’ll now have to wait 24 hours to see if another NHL club claims him off waivers.
