The Detroit Red Wings have decided to put Ville Husso on waivers so he can join the AHL team.
Husso is in the last year of a three-year deal worth $14.25 million, which he signed with Detroit back in 2022. His salary cap hit of $4.75 million is one of the highest on the team. The plan for Detroit was always to have three goalies after signing Cam Talbot to a two-year, $5 million contract on July 1st. With Talbot joining, Alex Lyon and Husso were already competing fiercely for spots.
In recent games, Lyon hasn’t had a chance to start yet, while Husso’s performance was shaky when he did play—allowing four goals from just 14 shots before being replaced by Talbot. Despite his promising .940 save percentage during pre-season games, this poor showing led to him being waived on Sunday .
Red Wings’ Goalie Shuffle:
Now moving ahead, Cam Talbot takes center stage as Detroit’s main goalie after saving 54 out of 56 shots (.964) across two matches so far. Lyon will be stepping up as backup; not long ago he won over Husso for starting duties with an impressive record of 21 wins and a .904 save percentage in 44 games last season.
Fans might wonder if this shake-up could make things more exciting or chaotic for their favorite team! Meanwhile, if Husso goes down to the minors, finding playing time won’t be easy there either since Grand Rapids has Sebastian Cossa leading them strongly at goal.
Cossa has been stellar with one win and saving 64 out of 68 shots (.941) in Grand Rapids’ first two games this weekend alone! Over past seasons too he’s consistently posted .913 save percentages—making it tough for anyone else like Husso to grab starts amid such fierce competition among Griffins goalies.
