Macklin Celebrini, a 17-year-old center and the consensus choice for the first overall pick in the 2024 NHL Draft, has a deep connection to San Jose, having lived there and played for the Jr. Sharks, making the San Jose Sharks’ winning of the NHL Draft Lottery a significant homecoming for him.
Oh, it’s kind of like a full-circle moment for Macklin Celebrini. You see, the San Jose Sharks just hit the jackpot on Tuesday. They snagged the top spot in the 2024 NHL Draft. And guess where it’s happening? The Sphere in Las Vegas, this June 28-29.
Now, everyone’s betting on Celebrini to be the first pick. This 17-year-old center isn’t just any player. After a stellar season at Boston University, he bagged the Hobey Baker Award. That’s a big deal, marking him as the top dog in Division I men’s college hockey. And get this – he’s the youngest ever to win it.
What’s even cooler? Celebrini’s turning 18 on June 13. Plus, he’s got a history with San Jose. Yep, he used to live there.
Let’s rewind a bit. Celebrini was originally from North Vancouver, British Columbia. But in 2019, his life took a turn. His dad landed a job with the NBA Golden State Warriors as their director of sports medicine and performance. So, the Celebrinis packed up and moved to San Jose.
While there, Celebrini showed off his skills with the San Jose Jr. Sharks. Even though he was playing with older kids, he dominated. We’re talking 49 goals and 94 points in just 54 games. Impressive, right?
But he didn’t stop there. Celebrini then took his talents to Shattuck St. Mary’s Prep School in Minnesota. After shining there for two seasons, he moved on to play for the Chicago Steel in the United States Hockey League. And finally, he made his mark at Boston University, scoring 32 goals and 32 assists last season.
Here’s the cherry on top. San Jose’s GM, Mike Grier, also has roots at Boston University. Talk about destiny, huh?
