Patrik Laine’s return to the Canadiens’ lineup will have to wait a bit longer.
The star forward, who’s been sidelined with flu-like symptoms since late last week, isn’t quite ready for a full comeback.
While Laine did hit the ice for a solo skating session before the team’s morning practice, he’s still not feeling 100%.
This setback throws cold water on expectations that both Laine and teammate David Savard would suit up for Friday’s matchup against the Washington Capitals.
The timing is particularly frustrating for the Canadiens, who could really use Laine’s offensive firepower against a tough Capitals squad.
Team officials watched Laine’s solo session carefully, but it’s looking unlikely he’ll be ready for Wednesday’s full team practice. Without that crucial prep time with the team, his chances of playing Friday are pretty slim.
“He’s making progress,” a team spokesperson said, “but we need to make sure he’s fully recovered before putting him back in game situations.”
The Canadiens are being extra cautious with their handling of both players’ returns, knowing there’s still plenty of hockey left to be played this season.
Fans will have to wait for further updates on both Laine and Savard as the week progresses.
