‣ Kane is also chasing the record for most points scored by an American in the NHL, currently held by Hall-of-Famer Mike Modano. Kane has 1,237 points, 137 behind Modano.

Starting in Buffalo would be intriguing for the Western New York native. After all, the Sabres showed interest in Kane. Detroit will also be visiting the Sabres on March 12. The Red Wings caused a stir by signing the 35-year-old on Tuesday. He’s on a one-year, $2.75 million contract, and they’re hoping he’ll bring some winning experience to their young team.
Kane has been in rehab after hip resurfacing surgery this offseason. This followed the New York Rangers, his former team, being knocked out by the New Jersey Devils in the Metropolitan Division semifinals last spring. The Wings are only the third team Kane has played for in the NHL. He bagged three Stanley Cups in 15 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks before being traded to the Rangers last February.
An interesting side note is that Daniel Sprong is giving up No. 88 for Kane. Kane expressed guilt over his new teammate having to change his number. Sprong will now be wearing No. 17. Besides helping his team reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016, Kane is also chasing Hall-of-Famer Mike Modano’s record. He’s aiming to score the most points by an American. Currently, Kane has 1,237 points, 137 behind the former Red Wing and Dallas Star.
As of now, the Red Wings are tied for third in the Atlantic Division. They’re on par with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Tampa Bay Lightning, all six points behind the Boston Bruins for first place.
