Patrick Kane, the veteran forward, is set to sign a one-year deal with the Detroit Red Wings. This news comes courtesy of a report from ESPN’s Emily Kaplan.
Post the 2022-23 season, Kane had to undergo hip resurfacing surgery. Since then, he’s been on a rehab journey.
In recent weeks, Kane had been in talks with several teams. These included the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, and Toronto Maple Leafs. According to Kaplan, Kane had whittled his choices down to two Eastern Conference teams before making a decision on Tuesday.
Interestingly, Kane, a 35-year-old three-time champion, moved his entire family to Toronto. The reason? To rehab from surgery over the past six months. During this time, Kane was involved in drills with former player Cody Hodgson.
Kane’s NHL career began with the Chicago Blackhawks, where he spent the first 16 seasons. However, the franchise traded him to the New York Rangers before last season’s trade deadline.
Unfortunately, Kane’s performance wasn’t as stellar as the team had hoped. He managed to rack up only 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in 19 regular-season games. On the other hand, Kane did score a goal and five assists during the team’s opening-round playoff series against the New Jersey Devils. He also clocked 17:22 minutes of ice time.
Over his NHL career, Kane has scored 451 goals and 786 assists. His contributions helped Chicago clinch three Stanley Cups in the 2010s. Currently, Kane ranks fourth in points among active players. His goals tally is the sixth-highest among active players.
Now, Kane is set to reunite with star winger Alex DeBrincat. They had previously skated on a line together during their time in Chicago. The Red Wings, who haven’t made the Stanley Cup Playoffs in seven consecutive seasons, are off to a strong start. Currently, with an 11-6-3 record, they sit in third place in the Atlantic Division.
