Ovechkin Nears Gretzky NHL Goals Record

Alex Ovechkin just won’t stop scoring.

The Washington Capitals superstar netted two goals against the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night, though his team fell 6-2. Those tallies brought his season total to 24 – pretty impressive for a 38-year-old who’s been doing this for nearly two decades.

But here’s where it gets really interesting: Ovi’s now sitting at 921 career regular-season goals, pushing his own NHL record even further past Wayne Gretzky’s old mark of 894.

There’s an even bigger milestone just around the corner.

When you add playoff goals to regular-season scores, Ovechkin is just two goals away from becoming only the second player ever to hit 1,000 total goals in NHL history. The only other guy to do it? You guessed it – The Great One himself.

Right now, Gretzky holds the all-time combined record with 1,016 goals (894 regular season + 122 playoff). Ovechkin’s sitting at 998 (921 regular season + 77 playoff).

It’s wild to think that a kid from Moscow who came to the NHL in 2004 is about to join Gretzky in one of hockey’s most exclusive clubs. And at the rate he’s scoring this season, he might not stop there.

The countdown to 1,000 is officially on. Hockey fans might want to tune in to every Caps game – you won’t want to miss this piece of history.
