The Edmonton Oilers were dealt a tough blow as Zach Hyman won’t suit up for Game 5 against the Dallas Stars on Thursday. Even worse? He’s likely done for the series.
Hyman got banged up in Game 4 after an awkward collision with Dallas’s Mason Marchment in the neutral zone. He left the ice holding his right shoulder and headed straight to the locker room.
It’s a huge loss for the Oilers at the worst possible time. They’re just one win away from reaching the Stanley Cup Final for the second straight year.
The veteran forward has been on fire this postseason, playing alongside superstars Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins on what’s been the most dominant line of the series.
Just how dominant? At even strength, they’ve outscored Dallas 3-0 and created more than twice as many scoring chances.
Hyman’s been throwing his weight around too. He leads all NHL players with 111 hits in these playoffs – that’s 41 more than any of his teammates.
Since joining Edmonton in 2021, he’s been Mr. Reliable in the playoffs:
- 35 goals
- 25 assists
- 60 points in 68 games
- Eighth-highest playoff scorer in the NHL over that span
The timing couldn’t be worse for Edmonton. If they win Thursday and Florida beats Carolina on Wednesday, the Stanley Cup Final could start as early as Saturday.
The Oilers will need others to step up. Evander Kane and Corey Perry will have to pick up the scoring slack, while goalie Stuart Skinner needs to keep up his hot streak – he’s stopped nearly 94% of shots in this series.
For now, Edmonton’s hoping their depth can carry them through. But replacing Hyman’s mix of scoring touch and physical play? That’s not going to be easy.
