The NHL Draft is just around the corner, and this year’s event could be more exciting than usual. With the salary cap going up and a pretty weak free agent market, we might see some big-name players changing teams through trades.
There’s already buzz around stars like Jason Robertson and Marco Rossi. And with the draft coming up fast, the rumor mill is only getting hotter.
Here are eight players who could be wearing different jerseys by the time the draft wraps up:
Jason Robertson is the biggest name in trade talks right now. The Dallas Stars forward has put up an incredible 151 goals since 2021, making him one of the NHL’s best young scorers. He’s only 25 and still getting better.
But here’s the thing – Dallas is tight against the salary cap, and Robertson’s due for a huge raise from his current $7.75 million deal when he becomes a restricted free agent next year.
Marco Rossi might be on the move too. The 23-year-old Minnesota Wild center just had a breakout 60-point season. He’s looking for a big pay bump, but the Wild might not want to shell out what he’s asking for.
Despite being on the smaller side at 5-foot-9, Rossi’s proven he can produce in the NHL. He’s racked up 45 goals and 55 assists over the past two years. A new deal around $7 million per year would make sense for a young center with his talent.
Rasmus Andersson’s time in Calgary might be running out. The defenseman’s in the last year of his contract, and if he doesn’t sign an extension soon, the Flames will probably trade him rather than risk losing him for nothing.
K’Andre Miller’s another interesting case. The Rangers defenseman is huge (6-5, 210 pounds) and mobile – exactly what teams love these days. But at 25, he hasn’t quite lived up to expectations in New York. A change of scenery might do him good.
Jonathan Marchessault’s first season in Nashville was rough. The former playoff MVP put up his worst numbers in years, with just 21 goals and 35 assists. At 34, he’s got four years left on his deal, but he showed he can still score when he put up 42 goals with Vegas just last season.
John Gibson might finally be leaving Anaheim. The veteran goalie bounced back last year with a solid .912 save percentage. The Ducks could get a good return for him now, and teams needing goalie help (looking at you, Edmonton) should be calling.
Morgan Rielly could be the odd man out in Toronto. The Leafs need cap space to sign other players, and moving the 31-year-old defenseman’s $7.5 million salary might be their best option.
Erik Karlsson’s time in Pittsburgh hasn’t worked out great. He can still put up points (109 in the last two years), but the Penguins would probably have to eat some of his massive $11.5 million salary to make a trade work.
