NHL Goalie Interference Rules Create League-Wide Controversy

The NHL’s replay system is causing major headaches, especially when it comes to goalie interference calls. What should be a simple fix is turning into a nightmare for teams, players, and fans alike.

Nobody seems to know what counts as goalie interference anymore – and that’s a big problem.

"It’s incredibly frustrating," Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas said Friday, after his team’s latest run-in with the controversial rule.

The Penguins had challenged a Buffalo Sabres goal Thursday night when Josh Doan made contact with goalie Arturs Silovs in the crease. The goal stood, and Pittsburgh got slapped with a penalty for the failed challenge.

But here’s where it gets weird.

On the very same night, the Columbus Blue Jackets had almost the exact same play reviewed – and that goal was overturned. Two nearly identical situations, two completely different calls.

Dubas didn’t stop there. He pointed out how a goal from Penguins forward Anthony Mantha was recently waved off for goalie interference, while a similar play involving the Nashville Predators was allowed to stand.

"How are coaches supposed to know when to challenge?" Dubas asked. "There’s just no consistency."

The replay system was meant to fix mistakes, not create more confusion. But right now, it’s doing exactly that.

Teams are left guessing whether to risk a penalty by challenging a play, since nobody seems to know how the league will rule from one night to the next.

It’s becoming clear that the NHL needs to take a hard look at its goalie interference rules – and fast. The current system isn’t just failing; it’s making everyone involved look bad.
