Alex Ovechkin just hit another incredible milestone, becoming only the second player ever to score 1,000 goals when counting both regular season and playoff games. The only other player to reach that mark? Wayne Gretzky.
It’s been quite a journey for the 40-year-old Washington Capitals star, who just last year passed Gretzky’s regular-season goals record.
Now he’s chasing another piece of history. Gretzky’s combined total of 1,016 goals is within reach, but time’s running out this season. With just 11 games left, Ovi will likely need to return next year to claim that record too.
The Russian superstar isn’t showing many signs of slowing down. He’s played in all 71 games this season, putting up 26 goals and 27 assists for 53 points.
That’s pretty impressive for a player in his 21st NHL season.
Things haven’t been perfect though. The Capitals are likely to miss the playoffs for just the fourth time in Ovechkin’s career. But for a guy who’s won nine Maurice Richard Trophies as the league’s top goal scorer and lifted the Stanley Cup in 2018, he’s earned the right to chase records on his own terms.
