The NHL season for 2024-25 is underway, and teams are starting to show if they’re real contenders for the Stanley Cup or just pretending.
Some teams in the Eastern Conference need to think about next year already. Montreal, Buffalo, Columbus, and Detroit are struggling. Montreal and Columbus are rebuilding from scratch, while Buffalo and Detroit’s attempts at rebuilding haven’t worked out well.
A little better off but still not quite there yet are Pittsburgh, Ottawa, Philadelphia, and New York Islanders. These teams might make it to the playoffs but don’t count on it. The Flyers have a future star in Matvei Michkov but aren’t ready now. Ottawa has young talent that makes them interesting if goalie Linus Ullmark steps up later this season. The Penguins have famous players like Sidney Crosby but struggle with defense and goaltending. Meanwhile, the Islanders can stop goals but can’t do much else right.
Teams on the Edge:
Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals could all make it to playoffs; however, they each have issues holding them back from being true champions. Fans might feel these teams aren’t consistent enough to win big games. Boston and Washington lack a top center player needed for victory. Tampa Bay has stars like Nikita Kucherov leading them but lacks depth in other areas needed for long playoff runs. The Rangers rely too much on their goalie Igor Shesterkin; their defense isn’t strong enough either.
The Real Contenders:
Carolina Hurricanes, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, Florida Panthers—these four look strong this season! Toronto often performs well during regular seasons only to disappoint later; however this time around both goaltending & defense seem improved which gives hope they’ll do better come playoffs time! New Jersey made smart moves by adding Jacob Markstrom as goalie plus Brett Pesce in defense—they’re bouncing back nicely after last year’s letdown thanks also partly due good luck avoiding injuries lately!
Florida Panthers boast an impressive offense deep enough rival any team league-wide whereas Carolina Hurricanes maintain relentless defensive style finally complemented breakout scorer Martin Necas who could drive offensive efforts through playoffs ahead! Bet your money one these four wins Eastern Conference title!
