Alex Ovechkin just hit another incredible milestone – becoming the first NHL player ever to score 900 regular season goals.
It wasn’t quick or easy. The 38-year-old Washington Capitals star needed 13 games to net the three goals that would get him there, but he finally did it Wednesday night against the St. Louis Blues in a 6-1 win.
The historic goal came in the second period, adding to what’s already been a legendary career. Just last season, Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky to become the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer.
When asked about his most memorable goal out of the 900, Ovi couldn’t resist taking a playful jab at NHL on TNT analyst Henrik Lundqvist.
“Probably the ones against you, man,” he laughed.
That joke hit home – Ovechkin had tormented Lundqvist throughout their careers, scoring 24 times against the former New York Rangers goalie in just 42 games.
To put Ovechkin’s achievement in perspective, he’s in incredibly rare company. Only 20 other players in NHL history have managed to score even 600 goals in their careers.
The Russian superstar continues to add to his legacy, proving why he’s considered one of hockey’s greatest goal scorers. At this rate, who knows what milestone he’ll hit next?
