The beginning of any sports season sparks curiosity about the top teams, but there’s another angle that fans should consider: which teams will be the most exciting to watch? While skill and strategy matter, sometimes it’s the unexpected moments that make a game memorable. Remember how the New Jersey Devils in the late ’90s and early ’00s were great but not always thrilling to watch? On the flip side, a team that’s struggling can sometimes be so unpredictable, it becomes entertaining.
At Daily Faceoff, we took on the task of identifying which hockey teams promise to deliver excitement this season. Our group—Colton Davies, Hunter Crowther, Mike Gould, Tyler Kuehl, and myself—evaluated various factors like standout players and team dynamics to rank these teams for their entertainment value during 2024-25.
Edmonton Oilers topped our list thanks largely to Connor McDavid’s incredible talent. His presence alone makes them a must-watch team. Add Leon Draisaitl’s skills (and defensive lapses), Evan Bouchard’s rise as a top defenseman, and you’ve got an electrifying lineup. However, some wish Jack Campbell had stayed longer for more fun times.
Colorado Avalanche
The Colorado Avalanche bring their own flavor of excitement with stars like Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar leading a fast-paced style that overwhelms opponents. Fans might think they’re losing some sparkle lately; however, their ability to maintain high energy keeps viewers engaged.
Opinions vary on whether they still have that “wow” factor or if it’s time for changes ahead of free agency in 2027.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Auston Matthews & Co., including Mitch Marner and William Nylander—what could go wrong or right? For fans who enjoy drama mixed with potential triumphs (or failures), watching Toronto try yet again is irresistible! Some find more intrigue here than watching other powerhouse teams breeze through early rounds year after year—a testament perhaps even endearing given past struggles!
Dallas Stars follow closely behind due largely because last year’s performances left us wanting more from Jason Robertson alongside emerging talents Thomas Harley & Logan Stankoven getting increased ice time this season—their depth promises continued fun viewing experiences ahead!
Vancouver Canucks hold special interest too—not just historically but also now amidst rising expectations within Western Conference standings post-impressive previous seasons’ showings led by Elias Pettersson among others making them compelling watches once again!
What do you think about these rankings? Are there any surprises or disagreements you’d like to share?
