Alex Ovechkin just keeps making history, even as he approaches 40.
The Washington Capitals superstar added another goal in the team’s 5-2 loss to Pittsburgh, pushing his career total to an incredible 897. While it wasn’t the finish to the regular season the Caps wanted, Ovechkin’s individual achievements this year have been nothing short of remarkable.
Just weeks ago, he did what many thought impossible – passing Wayne Gretzky on the all-time scoring list. That happened on April 6, sending the hockey world into a frenzy.
At 39 years old, Ovi isn’t showing many signs of slowing down. He finished tied for third in the NHL with 44 goals this season, matching Buffalo’s Tage Thompson. That’s pretty amazing for a player who’s been in the league for two decades.
The Capitals as a team had a strong year too, racking up 111 points. Only the Winnipeg Jets finished with more, leaving Washington just shy of claiming the Presidents Trophy.
But here’s the most mind-blowing stat: Ovechkin has now scored at least 30 goals in 19 of his 20 NHL seasons. Nobody else has ever done that. Not Gretzky, not Gordie Howe, nobody.
He’s part of an elite group of just 28 players who’ve managed 10 or more 30-goal seasons in their careers. And he’s still going strong.
The big question now is: how much longer can Ovi keep this up? Based on this season’s performance, it looks like he’s got plenty left in the tank.
