Montreal Canadiens Oilers Trade Rumors Heat Up

Trade rumors are heating up as the 2025-26 Olympic break and NHL trade deadline draw closer. The latest buzz? A potential swap between the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers that would send Patrik Laine to Edmonton in exchange for Andrew Mangiapane.

Both players could use a fresh start.

There’s just one catch – both have no-trade clauses in their contracts. Laine can block trades to 10 specific teams, while his hefty $8.70M cap hit dwarfs Mangiapane’s more modest $3.6M salary.

Laine’s stint in Montreal hasn’t gone as planned. The Finnish sniper has been sidelined since early in the season with a core muscle injury that required surgery, though he’s expected back after the Olympic break.

The numbers tell the story: just 34 points in 57 games over two seasons with the Canadiens. Before his injury this year, he managed just one assist in five games.

Mangiapane isn’t faring much better in his first season with Edmonton. The former Calgary Flame has put up 12 points in 47 games and struggles with a -19 rating.

Looking at their careers paints a different picture.

Laine burst onto the scene as the second overall pick by Winnipeg in 2016. He was absolutely dominant with the Jets, racking up 250 points in 306 games. His time in Columbus was solid too, with 138 points in 174 games.

All told, Laine’s career numbers are pretty impressive:

  • 422 points in 537 games
  • 224 goals
  • 85 power-play goals
  • 31 game-winners

Mangiapane’s path has been different. A sixth-round pick by Calgary in 2015, he worked his way up to become a reliable NHL forward. His best years came with the Flames, where he posted 215 points in 417 games and maintained a strong +52 rating.

After a brief stop in Washington, his career totals stand at:

  • 255 points in 545 games
  • 129 goals
  • 5 shorthanded goals
  • 20 game-winners

The trade could give both players exactly what they need – a chance to rediscover their scoring touch in new surroundings.
