Connor McDavid is making Olympic history look easy, racking up six points in his first two games for Team Canada – something no player has done since NHL stars started competing in the Olympics.
The Edmonton Oilers superstar put on another show Friday, scoring once and setting up two more goals in Canada’s dominant 5-1 win over Switzerland. It was his second three-point performance of the tournament.
For all his incredible NHL achievements, McDavid has never had the chance to chase Olympic gold until now. He’s clearly making up for lost time.
The 27-year-old has been the NHL’s most explosive offensive talent since entering the league, but team success has been harder to come by. His only championship came last year when he scored the overtime winner against Team USA in the 4 Nations Face-Off.
The Stanley Cup has proven especially elusive. Despite reaching the finals the past two seasons, McDavid and the Oilers couldn’t seal the deal either time.
This year looks even tougher. The Oilers have struggled through an up-and-down season that’s put their playoff hopes in doubt.
But the Olympics are offering McDavid a fresh shot at adding that missing piece to his trophy case – a gold medal. And he’s attacking the opportunity with the same breathtaking skill that’s made him the NHL’s most dangerous player.
If his first two games are any indication, we might be watching the start of a legendary Olympic performance.
