Nicholas Robertson is still trying to get traded before the season begins.
Despite possibly getting a bigger role with the Toronto Maple Leafs, he’s been in trade talks since February. Even though he’s played 87 NHL games and scored 14 goals with 27 points last season, his performances have been inconsistent. In junior hockey, he showed amazing talent with the Peterborough Petes, scoring 55 goals in one season. However, his NHL production hasn’t matched those early flashes of brilliance.
Robertson’s limited ice time has affected his performance. Last season was the first time he averaged over 11 minutes per game and scored on special teams. The Leafs have preferred players like Michael Bunting and Matthew Knies over him, partly due to former coach Sheldon Keefe’s choices. With Craig Berube now coaching, things might change if Robertson can prove himself .
Competition for Left-Wing Spot:
If he stays in Toronto, Robertson will compete against Knies, Max Domi, and Pontus Holmberg for a left-wing spot. Playing alongside Auston Matthews or John Tavares could offer great opportunities but Domi and Knies already have chemistry with these centers from last year. Fans might think this competition is exciting but tough for Robertson.
On the other hand, if Robertson gets traded, he’ll be one of the few available players on the market as September approaches. His career stats—17 goals and 34 points in 87 games—could attract teams needing more scoring power without demanding too much from their resources.
With Patrik Laine recently traded, it seems likely that Robertson could be next to find a new team looking for a shoot-first winger .
What do you think about Robertson’s future? Will he stay or go?
