Injuries are tough, and Zegras has been out for three games after getting hurt on December 4 against the Golden Knights.
He awkwardly fell during a faceoff, hurting his leg while trying to skate backward, and hasn’t played since. After consulting with doctors, he chose surgery over rehab for his lower-body injury.
Zegras’ decision means he’ll be sidelined longer than if he had chosen rehab. However, surgery means less chance of getting hurt again. The team hopes he’ll be back strong before the 4 Nations Face-Off. Last year was rough too; he missed many games due to similar issues before having ankle surgery that kept him out even longer.
Impact on Performance:
His injuries explain why his performance dipped last season. He scored only 15 points in 31 games, much less than the previous year’s 65 points. This season is similar—just 10 points in 24 games so far . His average game time is down to rookie levels at about 16 minutes per game.
Fans might feel worried seeing their favorite player struggle with injuries again.
Zegras isn’t alone in this; Robby Fabbri also had meniscus surgery recently. Both players were not performing great before getting injured—Fabbri had just two goals in 14 matches—but it’s still hard for a team that scores an average of only 2.37 goals each game.
Aiming for a return by January 23 against the Penguins means Zegras could miss another chunk of about twenty matches while healing up. He’s currently in year two of a $17.25 million contract spread over three years.
What do you think? Will Zegras bounce back stronger?
