The frustration finally boiled over for Leon Draisaitl after the Edmonton Oilers dropped their third straight game.
"Not consistent enough," Draisaitl snapped after Wednesday night’s loss. "This league’s too hard to just lollygag through games."
It should’ve been a night for celebration. The star forward passed Oilers legend Mark Messier for fourth place on the team’s all-time points list. Instead, he couldn’t even enjoy the milestone.
Draisaitl didn’t hold back, pointing fingers at everyone from the coaching staff down to the players on the ice.
"You need everybody," he said. "It starts with the coaches, like everybody. You’re never going to win if you have four or five guys going."
The German superstar did his part, scoring twice against the Calgary Flames. But it wasn’t enough to prevent a 4-3 loss to their struggling provincial rivals.
It’s been a familiar story for the Oilers this season – plenty of offense, but shaky defense and goaltending keep costing them games.
"Our leaders can be better," Draisaitl admitted, including himself in that assessment. "Take the break and regroup."
The timing couldn’t be worse for Edmonton’s slump. With the playoff race heating up, they’ll need to turn things around quickly when they return from the break.
