Johnny Gaudreau’s Brother Matthew Killed in Biking Accident

Johnny’s rookie season was stellar, scoring 64 points in 80 games and leading the Flames to their first playoffs in six years.

He shined in the postseason with nine points in 11 games, helping upset the Canucks and taking a game from the Ducks.

Over ten years, Johnny became the Flames’ offensive star, making five NHL All-Star appearances and becoming one of the league’s best wingers .

In 2018-19, he had his breakout year with 36 goals and 99 points, leading Calgary to a division title. He played over 20 minutes per game and finished fourth in Hart Trophy voting. Up until the end of his contract in 2021-22, Johnny dominated alongside Elias Lindholm and Matthew Tkachuk. That final season saw him achieve career-highs: 40 goals, 75 assists, and a +68 rating. His playmaking also boosted Lindholm’s and Tkachuk’s stats.

New Chapter with Columbus:

As an unrestricted free agent for the first time that summer, Johnny chose to move closer to his New Jersey home by signing a seven-year deal worth $68.25M with Columbus. Fans expected him to be the veteran leader needed for their rebuild. Over two seasons there, he led scoring with 33 goals and 101 assists across 161 games.

Matthew never reached NHL but had a strong minor league career. Starting at Boston College during Johnny’s junior year, Matthew later led his team in scoring as a senior with 35 points in 40 games.

Matthew began his pro journey with an AHL contract at Bridgeport Sound Tigers but mostly played for Worcester Railers in ECHL where he excelled offensively. In one standout season there: he scored 24 goals and made 36 assists over two years.

In search of new opportunities during COVID-19 pandemic times; Matthew went overseas playing briefly for Sweden’s Tyringe SoSS before returning stateside only to retire after one more appearance for Railers during ’21-’22 season.
