The New York Islanders have re-signed Simon Holmstrom for one year.
Instead of taking his qualifying offer, Holmstrom agreed to a one-way deal worth $850K. The Islanders picked him 23rd overall in the 2019 NHL Draft, and he debuted with them the next season. During his first year with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers, he played 46 games and scored eight goals along with 15 points. The following year, he split his time between the Tigers, HockeyAllsvenskan on loan, and Team Sweden’s junior team.
In the 2021-22 AHL season, Holmstrom really shined by scoring 12 goals and racking up 43 points in 68 games. This performance helped Bridgeport make it to the Calder Cup playoffs for the first time during his tenure. In those playoffs, he added three goals and four points over six games . The next season saw him debut in the NHL with limited minutes but still managing six goals and nine points in 50 games.
Holmstrom’s Progression
During his sophomore NHL campaign, Holmstrom moved up to a middle-six role within the team’s forward lineup. Over 75 games that season, he netted 15 goals and tallied up to 25 points, finishing sixth on the team in goals scored.
Fans might think this is a smart move by New York as they aim to boost their offense next season. They were among only eleven teams that didn’t average at least three goals per game during the last regular season of 2023-24.
With such an affordable contract for another year, Holmstrom is expected to continue being an important secondary scorer for the Islanders.
