Islanders Put Veteran Defenseman Mike Reilly on IR

The New York Islanders have placed Mike Reilly on injured reserve and called up Travis Mitchell.

Reilly hasn’t been on the ice since November 1st after a hit from Buffalo’s Jordan Greenway caused him to hit his head. He’s now out with an upper-body injury, likely a concussion. Before this, he played in 11 games without scoring, but he did make one penalty, three hits, and blocked four shots. Despite these stats, Reilly has been a valuable player for the Islanders since they picked him up last October. Last season he scored six goals and made 24 points, which were career highs.

Reilly’s absence coincided with Adam Pelech and Alexander Romanov leaving the lineup too, which left New York short on left-side defensemen. To fill in the gaps, they’ve brought up players like Samuel Bolduc and Grant Hutton to join Dennis Cholowski in rotation. Cholowski is the only one to score so far with two goals in eight games . But it’s Isaiah George who has really stood out in his first four NHL games.

Islanders Call Up Travis Mitchell:

Now they’re adding Travis Mitchell to the mix for his first NHL call-up ever! Fans might be excited about what he can bring to the team. Mitchell played college hockey at Cornell University where he got 47 points over 95 games but has found it tough going in the AHL with just seven points from 48 matches over three seasons. Yet he’s known for being a strong defender who plays hard and isn’t afraid of contact.

The Islanders are hoping Mitchell can add some energy to their lineup as they’ve struggled lately with a record of 3-4-2 in their last nine games.

What do you think? Can Mitchell help turn things around for them?
