The Hurricanes are sending Tyson Jost back to AHL Chicago, leaving his spot open for now.
Both of Carolina’s goaltenders are out of commission, with Pyotr Kochetkov entering concussion protocol after a collision in the game against the Blue Jackets. Coach Rod Brind’Amour shared that Kochetkov’s return is uncertain, while Frederik Andersen is recovering from knee surgery and won’t be back until early next year.
Kochetkov was injured when Sean Walker accidentally hit him during overtime. The young goalie has been stepping up due to injuries among veteran players like Andersen and Antti Raanta. This season, he became the clear No. 2 goalie after Raanta left as a free agent. In 13 games, Kochetkov has a record of 10-2-0 with a .904 save percentage and 2.42 goals-against average—pretty solid stats considering his role .
Goaltending Challenges:
Now, Spencer Martin and Yaniv Perets have to hold down the fort for the Hurricanes. Martin has some NHL experience but hasn’t been impressive lately with a .870 save percentage in four appearances since October. Perets is even less experienced; he’s only faced one NHL shot so far! His minor-league numbers aren’t great either, which makes fans wonder if Carolina might look for another goalie soon.
Jost heads back to AHL after failing to score in six straight games for the Hurricanes. He signed a low-cost contract with them after being let go by the Sabres but was quickly sent down early in the season before getting recalled briefly this month.
Do you think they should bring someone new into their lineup?
