Former Ducks Pick Joins KHL

There’s been a wave of NHL players moving to the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) this offseason, and Maxime Comtois is the latest to join them. On Thursday, HC Dynamo Moscow announced they signed Comtois for the 2024-25 season. “Maxime Comtois is a fast, powerful striker,” said Dynamo head coach Alexey Kudashov. “He will strengthen our first two attacking lines and isn’t afraid to work hard in every area of the ice.”

Comtois was picked 50th overall in 2017 but struggled to find his place during five seasons with Anaheim. His standout year was during the COVID-shortened 2020 season when he scored 16 goals and earned 33 points in 55 games. However, that year seemed more like an exception than a trend for him.

Last offseason, Comtois tried out with the Vegas Golden Knights but didn’t make the team after training camp. He then signed with the Chicago Wolves in the AHL, scoring 19 goals and getting 44 points in 65 games. In March, he joined Carolina Hurricanes on a one-year deal but played just one game, earning an assist.

Players Leaving NHL for KHL

Not receiving a qualifying offer from Carolina, Comtois decided to follow other players like Evgeny Kuznetsov and Wade Allison by heading to Russia.

Fans might wonder if this move will help revive his career or if it’s just another chapter in his unpredictable journey.

Although some may see this as a step back for Comtois, others think it could be an opportunity for him to shine in a new environment.

What do you think about these moves? Do you believe it’s good for their careers?
