The Flames have signed Jarred Tinordi to a two-way contract.
Tinordi, 32, has played for many teams since being drafted by the Canadiens in 2010. He’s been part of seven NHL organizations over 12 years, including the Coyotes, Penguins, Predators, Bruins, Rangers, and Blackhawks. Most of his career has been spent moving between the NHL and AHL.
In Chicago, Tinordi found some stability after being claimed off waivers from the Rangers just before the 2022-23 season started. Standing tall at 6’6” and weighing 229 lbs., he avoided going back to the AHL while with the Blackhawks. This was only his second and third seasons playing solely in the NHL after splitting time between Nashville and Boston in 2020-21. Despite his limited role on one of the league’s weaker teams, he managed to score two goals and get 15 assists for a total of 17 points across two seasons with a -44 rating and 104 penalty minutes .
Contract Details:
This summer marked Tinordi’s first time as an unrestricted free agent since signing with New York in 2021. Last April, Chicago extended his contract for one year at $1.25M to keep him off free agency. Fans might think it’s interesting that despite this extension, he now faces tough competition for a spot on Calgary’s roster.
It seems unlikely he’ll make Calgary’s opening night roster if they choose to carry seven defensemen instead of eight. Even though he could be an extra option if they go with eight defenders, offseason additions like Kevin Bahl and Jake Bean are likely ahead of him for regular playtime on Calgary’s left side defense.
If Tinordi clears waivers this season, he’ll probably end up playing for Calgary Wranglers in the AHL where he can mentor young prospects like Hunter Brzustewicz, Artem Grushnikov, and Yan Kuznetsov.
