The Calgary Flames are giving two promising prospects their first shot at NHL action in Thursday’s season finale against the Los Angeles Kings.
Hunter Brzustewicz and Samuel Morton got the call-up from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, adding some fresh faces to a Flames lineup that was officially eliminated from playoff contention on Tuesday.
For Brzustewicz, it’s a chance to show why he was a key piece in January’s blockbuster trade that sent Elias Lindholm to Vancouver. The 19-year-old defenseman has been pretty impressive in his first pro season, putting up 31 points in 69 games with the Wranglers.
“He’s got this amazing ability to move the puck and create plays,” said one team scout who’s watched him all season.
But it hasn’t all been smooth sailing. The young blueliner’s aggressive style has sometimes left him vulnerable, showing up in his minus-9 rating this year.
The NHL’s faster pace might actually help Brzustewicz find his groove. His quick decision-making and skating could shine even more at the highest level.
Then there’s Morton, and his story is really something.
After six years of college hockey, including four at Minnesota State-Mankato, the undrafted forward has taken the long road to the NHL. He lit it up in his final college season with 24 goals in 37 games.
That scoring touch? It definitely carried over to the pros.
Morton’s been one of the Wranglers’ best players this year, racking up 20 goals and 45 points. He’s also not afraid to throw his weight around, though his minus-14 rating suggests there’s still work to do on the defensive side.
If they both suit up Thursday, Brzustewicz would likely replace Jake Bean or Brayden Pachal on defense, while Morton could step in for Ryan Lomberg, Kevin Rooney, or Yegor Sharangovich.
It’s just one game, but for these two prospects, it’s the chance they’ve been waiting for.
