Edmonton Oilers Hire Stan Bowman as General Manager

The Edmonton Oilers have announced Stan Bowman as their new general manager.

Bowman takes over from Ken Holland, who did not receive a contract extension after the 2023-24 season. “I am excited and pleased to be welcoming Stan to the Edmonton Oilers,” said Jeff Jackson, CEO of hockey operations. “His vast experience and proven success in this role, together with the important work he has done in his time away from the game, fits our goal of being best in class when it comes to all facets of our organization.” Jackson added that they share a common vision for achieving another Stanley Cup title.

Previously, Bowman was the general manager for the Chicago Blackhawks. He, along with Joel Quenneville and Al MacIsaac, were banned due to their roles in a sexual abuse scandal but were reinstated by the NHL on July 1. In 2021, an investigation found that the team mishandled sexual assault allegations reported by Kyle Beach against video coach Brad Aldrich back in 2010. The Blackhawks were fined $2 million and Beach received a settlement later that year .

Bowman’s Return:

Sheldon Kennedy from Respect Group has worked closely with Bowman recently. Kennedy believes Bowman’s acknowledgment of past mistakes and efforts to make hockey safer make him valuable to any team. Fans might feel mixed about this news given Bowman’s history but could appreciate his commitment to change.

The Respect Group trains Canadians on preventing bullying, harassment, and abuse. During his time with the Blackhawks from 2009 until 2021, Bowman served as general manager and president of hockey operations. Under his leadership, they won three Stanley Cups.
