Trouble could be brewing in Vancouver as shocking claims emerge about star goalie Thatcher Demko’s future with the Canucks.
Former NHL head coach Doug MacLean dropped a bombshell on Friday’s “Real Kyper and Bourne” show, suggesting Demko wants out of Vancouver.
“I hear that [Demko] is not that excited to get into the net right now,” MacLean said. “I’m even hearing Demko doesn’t want to play [in Vancouver].”
It’s been a tough year for the 29-year-old netminder. He’s been dealing with two knee injuries and didn’t make it back onto the ice until December 10th against the Blues.
The timing couldn’t be worse for the Canucks, who are already dealing with plenty of drama. Trade rumors are swirling around stars J.T. Miller and Elias Pettersson, while Brock Boeser’s contract situation remains up in the air.
What makes this especially surprising is that Demko’s coming off his best season ever. He was runner-up to Connor Hellebuyck for the Vezina Trophy in 2023-24, the award given to the NHL’s top goalie.
MacLean, who previously coached the Florida Panthers and Columbus Blue Jackets, made these comments around the 10-minute mark of the show. While there’s still plenty of time for Demko to bounce back this season, these rumors raise serious questions about his future in Vancouver.
The big question now: Will the Canucks consider trading their star goalie? With all the other uncertainty surrounding the team, this could be the last thing they needed to hear.
