Connor McDavid just hit a massive milestone for the Edmonton Oilers, tying legendary Jari Kurri for second place on the team’s all-time scoring list with 1,043 points.
The 28-year-old superstar reached the mark Wednesday night against the Minnesota Wild, scoring a clutch power-play goal when his team was down 2-1.
He’d already made his presence felt earlier in the game, setting up teammate Zach Hyman for another goal.
While this is an incredible achievement, there’s still one mountain left to climb: Wayne Gretzky’s seemingly untouchable record of 1,669 points. The Great One put up those mind-boggling numbers – 583 goals and 1,086 assists – in just nine seasons with Edmonton.
McDavid’s been nothing short of spectacular in his 10 seasons with the Oilers. He’s already racked up seven All-Star appearances and three Hart Memorial Trophies as the league’s MVP.
But there’s one piece of hardware that’s still missing from his trophy case – the Stanley Cup.
The Oilers haven’t won hockey’s biggest prize since 1990, though they came painfully close last season, pushing the Florida Panthers to seven games before falling short.
This year, McDavid’s still playing at an incredible level. Through his first 40 games, he’s put up 59 points (17 goals and 42 assists), tied for sixth in the NHL.
With their captain performing like this, the Oilers look like they’ll be right in the mix for another Cup run this season.
