Connor McDavid dropped a bombshell about his future with the Edmonton Oilers, leaving fans wondering if their superstar might actually leave.
“Absolutely,” McDavid said when asked if he has unfinished business in Edmonton. But it’s what he said next that has Oilers nation holding its breath.
“I still need to do what’s best for me and my family and that’s who you have to take care of first,” the 26-year-old superstar admitted Thursday.
That’s not exactly what Oilers fans wanted to hear from the best player in hockey.
McDavid has just one year left on his current deal with Edmonton. After another disappointing playoff exit, speculation about his future has been heating up.
He’s been nothing short of spectacular for the Oilers, winning the NHL’s MVP award three times. But championship success has proved elusive.
The team’s current core has been pushing hard for that Stanley Cup, and McDavid acknowledged their efforts. “We’re holding this together, trying to get it over that finish line,” he said.
But that might not be enough to keep him in Edmonton.
For a franchise that’s built everything around their generational talent since drafting him first overall in 2015, the next year could be make-or-break. Will the Oilers finally give McDavid a reason to stay, or could hockey’s biggest star be wearing different colors in 2024?
