Cole Hutson is heading back to college hockey for another year, with sources telling Daily Faceoff’s Jeff Marek that the Washington Capitals’ star prospect will return to Boston University for his sophomore season.
It’s easy to see why the Caps might be disappointed. Hutson was absolutely incredible this year, putting up 46 points in just 37 games as a freshman defenseman. That’s not just good – it earned him Hockey East’s Rookie of the Year award.
The timing of his decision comes right after a tough loss in the National Championship game to Western Michigan. Hutson was held off the scoresheet in that one, which might’ve helped push him toward giving college hockey another shot.
He’s already proving to be a steal for Washington, who grabbed him 43rd overall in the 2024 NHL Draft. Hockey runs in the family – his older brother Lane is tearing it up as a rookie with the Montreal Canadiens right now, making a serious run at the Calder Trophy for NHL rookie of the year.
The way Cole plays is pretty amazing to watch. He’s got these slick head-fakes and quick moves that leave defenders looking silly. It’s the same style that had scouts drooling when he put up 51 points in 51 games with Team USA’s development program.
There are still some rough edges to smooth out. Like his brother Lane, Cole sometimes struggles with the physical side of defending. But Lane’s shown this year that those issues can be fixed with time.
At BU, Cole’s got a chance to follow some pretty impressive footsteps. He’s actually the third straight Terrier to win Hockey East Rookie of the Year, after his brother Lane and phenom Macklin Celebrini.
Next year could be even bigger. He’ll be gunning for:
– Hockey East MVP (currently held by Boston College’s Ryan Leonard)
– The prestigious Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s best player
– Another shot at the National Championship
The Capitals’ plan seems clear: let him dominate college hockey for one more year, then bring him straight to the NHL late next season.
