The new NHL season is just around the corner, and teams are gearing up for training camps.
However, fans of the Washington Capitals are puzzled by a recent off-ice decision. The team has signed a three-year deal with TikTok, making the app their official away jersey sponsor.
This partnership means TikTok’s logo will be on the right shoulder of Washington’s white away jerseys. Back in 2021, they partnered with Caesars for their red home jerseys. But this new deal with TikTok comes with its own risks.
Partnership Risks:
The agreement could either be a great success or a complete failure, especially if TikTok gets banned in the U.S. President Biden signed a law in April that forces ByteDance to sell TikTok to an American company within nine months or face a ban.
Five months have passed, and ByteDance hasn’t sold TikTok yet. Maybe Ted Leonsis knows something we don’t or maybe he got an offer too good to pass up.
Fans might wonder if this move is more about politics than hockey. Imagine if TikTok gets banned; their logo would still be on jerseys in cities where voters supported that ban! Is it possible that this is some kind of strategy to sway public opinion against the ban? ByteDance’s deadline falls right in the middle of the NHL season.
Some fans might think it’s clever but also worry it could distract from focusing on player performance and game skills.
What do you think about all this?
