Capitals Recall Veteran Defenseman Following Scary Injury

Following a scary incident involving Nick Jensen, the Washington Capitals recalled defenseman Dylan McIlrath from the Hershey Bears on an emergency loan, as Jensen’s health update remains undisclosed and he is likely to miss the remaining two games of the regular season.

After last night’s heart-stopper, Nick Jensen of the Washington Capitals had us all holding our breath. The team found themselves scrambling for a defenseman to fill his skates in the lineup. So, they’ve called up Dylan McIlrath from the Hershey Bears, as announced in a tweet. It’s an emergency loan move.

But here’s the thing—there’s no word yet on Jensen’s condition after that nasty crash with Michael Eyssimont of the Lightning. With just a couple of games left this season, it’s pretty clear they’re going to sideline Jensen for those, at the very least.

Now, onto McIlrath. The guy’s a tank and has been with the Capitals’ crew for three seasons, mostly grinding it out in the AHL. Over 192 games with the Bears, he’s netted seven goals and racked up 32 points. Not to mention, he played a key role in snagging the Calder Cup Championship last year.

But here’s the kicker—since the 2019-20 NHL season wrapped up, McIlrath’s barely seen the ice at the NHL level. Just three goals and six points over 73 games. Remember, this is the dude the Rangers grabbed 10th overall back in 2010, hoping he’d be a fortress on defense. Sadly, he hasn’t quite lived up to that hype since his days with the Moose Jaw Warriors.
