Alex Ovechkin just can’t stop making history. The Washington Capitals superstar added yet another NHL record to his incredible career Thursday night, scoring a dramatic overtime winner to beat the Ottawa Senators 1-0.
The goal came on a classic Ovechkin play – a lightning-quick shot on a two-on-one break that left Senators’ rookie goalie Leevi Merilainen with no chance.
While it’s not the big record everyone’s watching for – Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals mark that Ovi’s been hunting for years – this one’s still pretty special.
The 38-year-old Russian sniper has made a career of these moments. Racing down the ice, using his teammate as a decoy, and then unleashing that famous shot that’s terrorized NHL goalies for nearly two decades.
For Merilainen, it was a tough welcome to the NHL. The young Finnish goalie played amazingly all night, but in overtime, he faced one of hockey’s greatest goal-scorers – and Ovi did what Ovi does best.
The Capitals needed this win badly as they fight for a playoff spot. And once again, their captain delivered when it mattered most.
