The Washington Capitals have traded for Logan Thompson from the Vegas Golden Knights.
This deal answers the question of who will replace Darcy Kuemper, who was traded for Pierre-Luc Dubois. Kuemper was Washington’s main goalie last season but only played 33 games due to injuries and personal reasons. He also didn’t perform well, winning just 13 games with a .890 save percentage, his worst ever.
In Kuemper’s absence, Charlie Lindgren stepped up as the starting goalie. He won 25 games with a .911 save percentage in 50 appearances. Although he struggled in the playoffs by allowing 14 goals on 93 shots and the team got swept, Lindgren still showed promise .
Fans might think this trade is a smart move to strengthen their team.
New Goalie Competition
Lindgren is expected to keep his starting role next year since he’s now the highest-paid goalie on the team. However, he’ll face competition from Thompson, who did well as Vegas’ starter when Adin Hill was injured. Thompson had 25 wins and a .908 save percentage in 46 games this season. Since his NHL debut in 2021, he’s racked up 58 wins and a .912 save percentage over 107 career games—a solid record for someone on a cheaper contract than many veterans.
Thompson will join Lindgren and Hunter Shepard in what should be an exciting battle for playing time. His steady performance could make him stand out among the trio.
Vegas’ New Goalie Setup
By trading Thompson, Vegas gains two draft picks and more flexibility with their goalies. Adin Hill has been impressive when healthy, boasting a career .910 save percentage over 139 games. He’ll now be their clear starter next season while Jiri Patera and Isaiah Saville compete for the backup spot unless another trade happens.
